A Thank You From Garrett's Family!
July 1, 2008

Garrett received his beautiful quilt last week. The whole family loved laying the quilt on the living room floor and looking at each square and where it was from. Squares were from all over the world. There was even one from our very small hometown of Sonora,CA. The quilt squares were each so different and will keep Garrett's interest forever. From the moment Garrett received the quilt he has wrapped himself in it every chance he gets. There is an aura of love that comes from that quilt it is really hard to describe it. To each and every person who participated in making, coordinating, and shipping this very special gift thank you very much. It is something that is very special and will always be treasured by our family.

Garrett's Story
Written by Garrett's mom in August 2007

Garrett was born on November 2, 2001.  When he was born he was blue and not breathing.  My husband and sister thought he had passed on.  Thankfully the doctors and nurses were able to revive him.  He went on to have normal childhood developments and milestones.

In January of 2006 Garrett had a routine physical.  The doctor noticed that Garrett's spleen was enlarged  and scheduled another visit the next week.  During the next visit the spleen was even more enlarged and the doctor ordered a CT scan.  The next morning the doctor drove to our house with the news.  Our 4 year old son had cancer and we needed to drive to the hospital that was 3 hours away as soon as possible.  As a mother I was frightened, in shock, and in a panic to arrange for Garrett's brother to be taken care of and to arrange for a subsitute to take over my class for an unknown period of time.

Garrett was diagnosed at the hospital with Wilms tumor. It is a form of kidney cancer.  The day after we arrived at the hospital Garrett had his kidney removed with a tumor the size of a football.  He had 6 months of chemotheraphy and on going tests to make sure no cancer cells were remaining.  He continues to have blood tests and scans.  So far he has remained in remission.
