Kayla M.'s Story
Written by Kayla's mom Brandi in September 2008

Kayla was diagnosed with Bilateral Micropthalmia. This means that she was born with small eyes. Basically her eyes began to develop and then stopped. There are no eye transplants right now that will allow Kayla to see. We won't know for sure what she can see until she can tell us. We know she can see bright lights and the sun shining, but anything more than that is a guess.

Currently Kayla is being fitted for conformers. They are plastic shells that go into the eye socket in front of her eyes. Because Kayla's eyes are so small she needs the shells in the socket to help develop the structure of her face. The conformers help her eyes to look more open and not so droopy. Eventually she will receive a painted shell that will look like a normal size eye.

Kayla has GERD which has lead to bleeding stomach ulcers. She needs to take several medications and drink special formula to keep this under control.

Kayla receives physical, occupational, vision, and aqua therapy 5 days a week.

"God gives you what you need not what you want. We know Kayla needs the love of family and friends more than we want her to have vision. She will just have to do things different to "see" the world."

Thank you for your endless support as we continue on our journey.
