Madeline Q.'s Story
written by mom Holly

Madeline was born on December 3, 1997.  She is a beautiful little girl who's smile lights up the whole room.  Madeline has had jaundice since birth we weren't quite sure why.  After taking her to the hospital for the possible flu virus they felt a mass in her spleen area and said he spleen was really enlarged.  They transferered her via ambulance to Cardinal Glennen Childrens Hospital.   Upon arrival they immediately gave her an IV and drew blood and they admitted her to the 4th floor which is oncology/hemotology.  I was scared half to death.

The doctor's there quickly figured out what was wrong, they said Madeline had a rare blood disorder called Spherocytosis and that her red blood count was only 6 and her hemocrit was only 7.9, she was extremely anemic.  Her stay there lasted 2 days and in that time she recieved countless tests including ultrasound, blood panals and also a transfusion.  She might need another transfusion before surgery as they have to remove her gallbladder and spleen.  Through it all she remained with a smile on her face and was trying to reassure her father and I that she would be ok.  She still has a long road to recovery with the surgery coming up and then she will have countless visits to her hemotoligist and will have to be on low doses of antibiotics the rest of her life to ward off sepsis.  She is a remarkable little girl and I'm so proud to be her mother.
