Samantha H.'s Story
Written by Samantha's mom in May 2008

Sammie was born July 11, 1997... healthy and happy.. she began complaining of leg pain in June of 2006 she was almost 9 at the time. The pain only came at night and so we thought it was growing pains. She took two dance classes a week, played volleyball and swam during this time. The night before Thanksgiving she said her leg really hurt and it was then you could clearly see a bump. We waited until Friday to take her in and she was taken in for an X-Ray right away- They felt even before a bone biopsy that is was Osteosarcoma of the right femur.
After more tests they also found 5 tumors in her left lung. Sammie had 10 weeks of chemo then limb salvage surgery. They were able to put a rod in her leg. They replaced 60% of her her femur, her knee, and part of her shin with this metal. She had 8 more months of chemo as well and a lung surgery to remove the tumors and they had to take out part of her left lobe. Treatment was over in Sept 2007 and at her first scan they thought they saw something down in her tailbone... but a biopsy missed it and it came back clean.. no sign of cancer.. Feb 2008 her tailbone collapsed and she was unable to walk. Another biopsy showed she does have Osteosarcoma in her tailbone and 2 new tumors in her left lung again.. Sammie has had 2 rounds of chemo and spine surgery that removed part of her tailbone and propped it up with screws in the hope that she may walk again.. she will do 6 more rounds of chemo starting June 2008 and face another lung surgery as well. She is brave and beautiful and we are proud to be her parents...
