A Thank You From Sarah's Family!
July 15, 2008

We wanted to thank you for the beautiful quilt you sent Sarah.  It arrived just after she passed away, so she never got to see it.  I do know she would have loved it.  We have put it on her favorite chair in the family room.  I wasn't sure if we should keep it, but it reminds us everyday how much people cared about Sarah, even those who didn't know her.  She was a special girl and we miss her terribly.  Thank you and everyone who made the quilt.

Sincerely,
Kim, Scott & Megan

Sarah P.'s Story
Written by Sarah's mom in 2008

Sarah was born August 31,1996 she has one sister Megan who was born almost two years later July 14,1998.

Sarah had been healthy with only the usual childhood illnesses. She began occasional right thigh pain in September 2004 and then began limping in January 2005.  After many visits to her family MD and an orthopedic specialist they finally did an MRI on April 2, 2005. We were told on the next Tuesday that Sarah had a large tumor on her ilium and sacrum they thought initially that it was Ewings sarcoma because this was more common in her age group but after biopsy we were told it was chondroblastic osteosarcoma.

She began treatment with standard chemo and the tumor grew as well as a lung mets and clot in her IVC. We traveled to NYC, and Mayo clinic for opinions and did not get any help from either place they just said try the new chemo.

She began the new chemos Ifos and VP16 and did get a response the tumor began shrinking. She continued on this chemo up until and during Proton beam radiation which she began in Boston December 2005 thru February 2006. Scans in March showed the Pelvic tumor stable but also showed three new tumors in her right lung. She tried a nebulizer treatment and two different chemos over the spring and summer. Nothing helped and the tumors grew and she now has multiple tumors in the right lung and two in the left.

Sarah is currently being treated at MD Anderson in Houston Texas she had surgery Sept 26, 2006 to remove the tumors on the right and will have surgery on the left in three weeks.

Sarah had her left thoracotomy on October 25th. She also had a collapsed lung on the right side from the previous surgery. After three weeks with a chest tube on suction this is now resolved. She is now being treated with several drugs to prevent recurrence.

3/3/07 Sarah had scans at MD Anderson and is No Evidence of disease!!!  She will continue on her meds until October as she is considered "ultra high risk".

5/4/07 Chest and pelvic scan show NED!!

6/28/07 Chest scan clear watching sacrum which lights up on PET scan, next scans September.

7/27/07 Chest scan NED!!

8/16/07Ambulance to Boston Childrens 8/17/07 Open heart surgery to remove tumor/clot from heart.

10/3/07 Surgery to remove rest of IVC clot/tumor at MD Anderson. Sacral and hip tumors.

2/14/08 Started clinical trial at MD Anderson Tumors right hip, sacrum, pelvis and lung.

Sarah passed away on May 14, 2008.
