Delaney G.'s Story
Written by Delaney's mom Amy in May 2009

Delaney was a fun-loving, energetic, social pre-teen prior to her diagnosis.  She loved hanging out with friends and talking 'girl talk'.  She was busy with choir, soccer and track.  You knew she was happy when she was singing...she loves to sing and has a beautiful voice.

Delaney entered Children's Hospital on Friday, June 6, 2008, and on Tuesday, June 10, was diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma. We noticed she was getting weak at the end of the school year and assumed it was due to her busy schedule.  When she became ill on June 2, we assumed the end of the school year finally caught up with her.  I took her to the doctor on June 5 since she wasn't getting better.  Luckily they performed a physical exam and a MRI.  On June 6, the doctor called me with the news and told me they were waiting for us at Children's.

She started chemo on June 10, 2008. Her treatment plan consists of 54 weeks of chemo, radiation, and hopefully surgery. Delaney spent 3 weeks in the hospital during June before coming home. During the first half of her treatment she spent about 50% of the time in the hospital.  She spent the first week of January, 2009 in the hospital.  Since then she's been able to do her treatments via outpatient.

We're very thankful that the treatment has been very successful.  We're looking forward to her final chemo treatment in July, 2009 and scans in August.  She's excited to start high school in the Fall!
